How do you handle disasters?
- Do they stress you out?
- Does your heart start racing?
- DO YOU JUST WANT TO YELL?
I’ve been there. A lot. But today, I want to share one of my favorite stories where I wanted to rip my hair out… but instead, I did something else… and it changed my day.
Keep reading to find out happened… and YES, it included a tub of Vaseline!
While visiting a friend, I was attempting to put my 2 and 3-year-old down for a nap. They would not stop talking despite me telling them it was quiet time. Then suddenly it was silent… a little TOO silent. I waited a few minutes and then went upstairs.
My 2-year-old daughter was buck naked. She had climbed out of her Pack & Play and was smothered in a tub of Vaseline – literally, it was in her hair, all over her body… and she was trying to pass handfuls of it through the crib to my 3-year-old son. Needless to say, the room and my children were an utter disaster.
My initial reaction was to scream and yell, but instead I started laughing… hysterically. It was so ridiculous! Nap time was clearly over – I wiped them raw with a towel and threw them in the bathtub. Even after 5 shampoos, we had a long way to go!!
I could have screamed at them, let myself get SO MAD, which would make them cry, which would make me even madder. And my day would be ruined.
But instead, I LAUGHED. And I laughed SO HARD it made my belly ache. It was one of those laugh attacks I remember having as a kid and it was SO FUN!
Stress can overtake your body.
- It raises your blood pressure.
- It makes your heart race.
- It triggers your adrenal glands to release cortisol (the stress hormone) which creates more fat.
Stress literally stresses your body. And it makes you gain weight!
The next time you’re stressed – just try it. DO IT! LAUGH!
You will be surprised how a really bad situation can lighten up. If anything, people will laugh with you because your outburst was so funny and unexpected!!
Were you ever stressed but handled it calmly or unexpectedly? Will you laugh the next time you want to scream? Share your story in the comments below!
